Woodglen sparks student excitement for reading

Earlier this fall, Woodglen Elementary celebrated the Grand Opening of "Willow's Bistro", a structured and fun format to expose students to a variety of new titles, authors and genres in the library.

Our Media Technician, Tammy Menard, saw the need to broaden our fifth grade students' reading "diet" and to help them find "just right" books based on their reading ability.

This led to a collaborative effort with Lisa Foubert, district library facilitator, to design an event that would meet students' needs in a fun and engaging way. From this collaboration came "Willow's Bistro", a place where students can come and sample books to see what they like and want to try.

A classroom setting with a large projection screen displaying information, and a person standing in front of the class, surrounded by a group of students.

Tammy worked with Lisa to match students to books according to both interest and reading level. Students spent a few minutes "sampling" each book by reading the front and back of the book as well as the first few pages, to see if they were interested in checking it out. At the end, each student left with a book that they were eager and excited to read!

Tammy and Lisa, we celebrate your commitment to students' success and being willing to go above and beyond to enhance the library experience for Woodglen students!

Special thanks to the Woodglen Elementary community for submitting this Five Star Story.
